 | Darktown
Strutters (1975) Directed by William Witney, USA Here's an odd comedy
that seems to have been overlooked a bit. A bizarre fantasy / blaxploitation /
social satire with a few soulful musical numbers courtesy of The Dramatics! 4
female biker mama's riding tri-hogs search Watts for queen biker Syreena's (Trina
Parks) kidnapped mother Cinderella. Turns out there's a racist fast-food magnate
named Cross (Norman Bartold who is intentionally made to be a dead ringer for
Colonel Sanders!). He has ties with the KKK (who also ride motorbikes!) and has
plans to clone himself using a bizarre birth machine! The film does touch on a
few social issues but the approach is so satirical that it comes across as nothing
you've ever seen! For instance, the violence is enhanced with Hanna-Barbara-like
cartoon sound effects, and the police (including genre fave Dick Miller) are portrayed
as total stumbling dimwits who constantly screw up. The Dramatics sing their hit
"What You See Is What You Get"! Sure, it is ultra-lowbudget (produced
by Gene Corman, Roger's brother!) and some of the jokes misfire, but that just
adds to the weirdness! Rated R |

| Drum
(1976) UNCUT VERSION
Directed by Steve Carver & Burt Kennedy, USA I had waited for years to
see this follow-up to "Mandingo" (both movies were based on novels by
Kyle Onstott and star Ken Norton) and after finally getting to see it I thought
it was much better than what I had heard! Drum is a young boy who, unbeknownst
to him, was born of a black father and a white mother (Marianna, played by Isela
Vega). The mother becomes the madam of a brothel and has Drum raised by a black
woman posing as his birth mother. He grows up to be an enormously strong but very
gentle person. After being forced into a fight with a slave named Blaise (Yaphet
Kotto who is excellent) by a gay slave trader, Drum is sent away to be the butler
to slave breeder Hammond Maxwell (well portrayed by Warren Oates). It is here
that most of the movie takes place, as Oates attempts to get to know his ex-prostitute
but now prim-and-proper new wife (played by Fiona Richmond) and deals with his
naughty blond daughter (played by a very young looking Rainbeaux Smith) who spends
most of her time prick-teasing the male slaves! With an unfortunately short appearance
by Pam Grier. Rated R |
